IN THE FAR NORTH OF CANADA, A CARGO SHIP LOSES CONTAINERS, POSING AN ENVIRONMENTAL RISK.
DETAIL INFORMATION
In Nunavut's northernmost territory, which is south of the Arctic Circle yet has a polar climate and bitter cold for most of the year, the government and the Canadian government are frantically trying to address a possible environmental problem and boating hazard. A cargo ship that supplies the isolated area with essential supplies had an accident late on Friday afternoon, October 27, spilling some of its cargo into the harbour.
As the Canadian Coast Guard and NEAS, the owners of Nunavik Eastern Arctic Shipping, attempt to find the cargo that is reportedly drifting in the harbour, alerts have been sent out cautioning boats to exercise caution. Twenty shipping containers and various cargo tumbled off the cargo ship and into Frobisher Bay, which is close to the port of Iqaluit, according to a government advisory.
