FORTESCUE'S INITIAL "GREEN" BULKER FUELS WITH AMMONIA AT PORT HEDLAND
DETAIL INFORMATION
A Capesize ore carrier has refueled with green ammonia at Port Hedland, Australia, marking a first for the Australian market and for mining giant Fortescue's export activities.
The Mineral Europa, a bulker with a 200,000 dwt capacity, is chartered by Fortescue and operated by the Belgian company CMB.Tech. She is assigned to the main shipping route from Port Hedland to China - where two-thirds of the world's iron ore trade is directed.
Fortescue states that the green ammonia utilized at Port Hedland produces no carbon emissions when employed as marine fuel. Port authority Pilbara Ports states that if applied to the iron ore fleet concentrated in Australia, transitioning to ammonia bunkering could reduce emissions by up to 4.5 million tonnes of CO2 each year.
Norwegian ammonia manufacturer Yara operates a large conventional natural gas-to-ammonia facility in the Pilbara region, enabling it to incorporate carbon-capture ammonia production later on.
