  • JAPANESE AMMONIA SYSTEM COMBINED WITH CAR CARRIERS, SUPPLY, AND BUNKERING

    DETAIL INFORMATION

A coalition of Japanese firms intends to create the inaugural integrated system for utilizing ammonia as fuel for marine applications. The system connects the production and distribution of green ammonia with fuel sales, bunkering, and the functioning of ammonia-powered car carriers to create a completely integrated system.

The firms think it will be the initial commercial supply chain combined with applications for ammonia fuel. They state that the initiative will advance decarbonization and simultaneously encourage the wider use of ammonia for industrial and various other purposes.

"The seven companies stated in the announcement that by merging their technologies, knowledge, and infrastructures, they will create a sophisticated integrated business model that combines ammonia fuel sourcing and supply, the building of ammonia-powered car carriers, and the development of an ammonia bunkering vessel."

To generate demand and assist in the advancement of the complete system, NYK and Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha (“K” Line) have decided to construct a total of four car carriers powered by dual-fuel ammonia engines. Every company will present two of the car carriers expected to be finished by 2030. Imabari Shipbuilding, Shin Kurushima Dockyard Co., and Nihon Shipyard Co. will handle the design and building of the four ships.
