DEVELOPMENT PROCEEDS OF NEW TYPE OF CO2 TRANSPORTERS FOR CCS
DETAIL INFORMATION
A new category of shipping, specially designed CO2 carriers aimed at facilitating the developing initiatives in carbon capture and storage (CCS), is continuously expanding. The initial phase of commercial activities is starting, and the industry is advancing the growth of the vessels.
Northern Lights, a collaboration among Equinor, Shell, and TotalEnergies, was the inaugural project in the sector, commencing commercial activities in 2025. It was created with a first capacity of 1.5 million tonnes annually and has already revealed plans for growth. It also emerged as the first transnational project, as it established commercial agreements with Yara in the Netherlands, Ørsted in Denmark, Stockholm Exergi in Sweden, and Inherit in Norway.
On April 9, the company marked the naming of its third vessel, the Northern Phoenix, a 7,500 cbm gas carrier, which is the third ship chartered long-term from Bernhard Schulte. The ships carry the CO2 to the company's site in Norway, where it is processed and injected offshore into long-term storage in a reservoir 2,600 meters beneath the seabed. The initial ships are powered by LNG and include a rotor for wind-enhanced propulsion.
