  • RESEARCH: WIND POWER IS ESSENTIAL FOR THE DECARBONIZATION OF SHIPPING

    DETAIL INFORMATION

A recent study emphasizes the promise of wind propulsion in aiding the shipping sector's decarbonization efforts. Although only a small percentage of ocean-going ships utilize wind-assisted propulsion, the study indicates that equipping most of the global fleet with this technology could be a major advancement in achieving international climate objectives.

NThe worldwide merchant fleet is estimated to consist of approximately 60,000 ships exceeding 1,000 gross tonnes. However, merely around 100 have been equipped with wind propulsion technologies like Flettner rotors, suction sails, and wing sails that capture wind energy to enhance engine power and lessen fuel use.

Even though the shipping sector has been hesitant to embrace wind propulsion, the recent study highlights the significance of this technology in efforts to reduce carbon emissions, especially since other renewable e-fuels might not become competitive at scale until the 2040s.
