LEADING THE WAY IN DEVELOPING THE FIRST HYDROGEN-ELECTRIC SHIP
DETAIL INFORMATION
Building ships fueled by hydrogen is something that the Lithuanian shipping sector is pioneering, being among the first in the world. Even though the technology is very promising, very few ships that use hydrogen fuel cells and batteries have been built.
The keel laying event marked the start of Western Baltija Shipbuilding's (WBS) construction of the nation's first hydrogen-electric ship. This ship is a harbour boat that was put into service by the Klaipeda State Seaport Authority with the purpose of managing garbage.
"I am happy that Lithuania is building this state-of-the-art vessel in Klaipeda that satisfies the strictest environmental protection regulations," stated Marius Skuodis, the minister of transport and communications for Lithuania. "This is really important and pertinent, not just for Lithuania but the entire world."
The ceremonial keel-laying ceremony held today is a crucial step in the construction of ships. The vessel's initial block has been finished. A special plate adorned with three coins was affixed to the block to commemorate the occasion.
