JAPAN UNVEILS INITIAL BATCH, $3.8B INVESTMENT IN SHIPBUILDING FIRMS
DETAIL INFORMATION
Japan’s Minister of Transport announced the government’s initial investments in the shipbuilding sector as part of a bold initiative to significantly grow the industry. Minister Yasuyuki Kaneko emphasized that shipbuilding is among the 17 key sectors in the government’s growth strategy.
Previously a leader in shipbuilding, Japan's market share has significantly dropped due to the rise of lower-cost competitors in South Korea and China. In 2025, the Japan Ship Exporters’ Association (JSEA) announced total orders for 186 vessels amounting to nearly 9 million gross, reflecting a decline of 16.5 percent compared to 2024. It exported 191 vessels, amounting to 8.32 million gross tons. Its share of the market was about 9 percent of worldwide orders.
“The restoration of Japan's shipbuilding sector is now starting to take shape,” Kaneko stated in a press conference on Friday.
