MAERSK AND HAPAG-LLOYD REESTABLISH ANOTHER GEMINI ROUTE TO SUEZ

The gradual return of containerships to the Suez Canal is ongoing, with Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd announcing that another route of their Gemini Cooperation has been reinstated to the trans-Suez route. This is the initial service the carriers have reinstated on the route since the Houthi rebels declared a blockade of Saudi Arabian ships and renewed assaults in July.
The statement emphasized a comprehensive evaluation of the security conditions in the Red Sea region. Previously, Maersk indicated that should the security conditions worsen, it could return to the Cape of Good Hope and that it had backup plans prepared. Up to now, the assaults have solely targeted tankers associated with Saudi Arabia, though reports emerged this weekend of attacks on nearby ports as well.
The AE19 route of the Gemini Cooperation, connecting Asia with the Suez Canal and Port Tangier, is the most recent to return to the trans-Suez corridor, according to the carriers. It begins with the Berlin Maersk (17,480 TEU), a newer ship from the company constructed in 2025, currently en route from Malaysia.
