NORWEGIAN SHIPPING GROUP PLACES ORDER FOR TWO ELECTRIC SHORT-SEA CONTAINER SHIPS
DETAIL INFORMATION
Norway’s maritime investment firm Eitzen is advancing its initiative to construct two electric container ships, claiming this will modernize short sea freight and hasten the shift to battery-operated vessels. During a ceremony in Oslo on June 12, the firm announced it was ordering the construction of two ships to be built in China.
The order was made with Zhejiang Dongpeng Shipbuilding & Repairing Co. The initial ship is expected to be delivered in 24 months, while the second will follow in 27 months. Eitzen announces it is sharpening its emphasis on maritime electrification with Zen, one of its group companies, leading the initiative.
The vessels, set to be among the biggest electric container ships ever to be commercially operated, will be utilized to create an electric freight route. Zen intends to run the ships in the North Sea area, linking the harbors of Northern Europe. The path will link Hamburg, Gothenburg, and Oslo. All the ships will possess a capacity of 900 TEU, creating a new environmentally friendly shipping route for Northern Europe.
