The port of Massawa is the main entry point for products destined for the Eritrean market. The port has a long history, as it is built around a series of natural and protected bays with safe anchorages and adequate connectivity to Eritrea's hinterland. The modern port was established in the nineteenth century and was originally built by Italian and British colonial powers. The port fell into disuse after WWII, but is now undergoing extensive renovation and restoration of facilities and services under the direction and authority of the Eritrean government.
