Puerto Cortés, formerly known as Puerto de Caballos, is a port city and municipality on Honduras' north Caribbean coast, located on the Laguna de Alvarado, north of San Pedro Sula and east of Omoa, and featuring a natural bay. The current city dates back to the early days of the colonial period. It flourished quickly in the twentieth century, owing to the railroad and banana production at the time. The seaport is the largest in Central America and the 36th largest in the world by volume of traffic. Puerto Cortés is a city with a population of 69,000 people (2020 calculation).
