  • MASSACHUSETTS EYES NOVA SCOTIA FOR OFFSHORE WIND ENERGY SUPPLY

    DETAIL INFORMATION

Confronted with increasing electrical power demands and a goal to enhance renewable energy, Massachusetts is considering importing renewable energy from nearby Nova Scotia. The groundbreaking agreement would offer a unique solution to fulfilling requirements while simultaneously tackling the Trump administration's resistance to the advancement of offshore wind energy production.

Massachusetts is a robust advocate for the offshore wind energy sector, hosting some of the earliest significant projects in the United States. Vineyard Wind 1 is just weeks from completion and has been leading the fight against the Trump administration's attempts to halt the development of offshore wind energy. In January, Massachusetts Attorney General Andrea Joy Campbell submitted an amicus brief in support of Vineyard Wind in its legal action against the Trump Administration, and last year Massachusetts spearheaded the state’s lawsuit challenging the Trump administration’s executive order concerning the industry’s future.

On February 4, Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey and Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston met to sign a memorandum of understanding aimed at having Nova Scotia provide offshore wind energy to the state. The deal is presented as beneficial for the state, which has increasing energy demands, and will aid Nova Scotia in its effort to initiate Canada’s first offshore wind projects.
