RESERVATIONS OPEN FOR SOUTH KOREA'S INITIAL COMMERCIAL ARCTIC SHIPPING JOURNEY

Panstar Line in South Korea has started taking cargo reservations for the nation’s inaugural commercial containership journey via the Northern Sea Route to Europe. Although officially labeled as a trial route, the company indicates it is garnering significant regional interest in the journey as part of a possible service aimed at competing with Chinese shipping across the Arctic.
The journey is being arranged in collaboration with the Korea Ocean Development Corporation and the Korea International Trade Association. It enjoys robust backing from the Korean government, which chose Panstar Group in May 2026 to manage the inaugural journey. Media reports indicated that the major carriers, such as HMM and Pan Ocean, had chosen not to present proposals to the government for the test voyage. Panstar is a smaller, regional carrier primarily operating RoRos and passenger ferries.
The firm has not yet announced the name of the ship it will utilize for the inaugural journey, which is now officially set to leave on August 22 from Busan, South Korea. It states that the vessel can hold 2,800 TEU. The government mandated that a ship must have either a current polar certificate or the ability to secure certification for the route prior to departure.
