STRICT COVID-19 LOCKDOWN IMPACTS PORT OPERATIONS AT SHANGHAI
DETAIL INFORMATION
Despite initial denials, the COVID-19 shutdown in Shanghai is having a substantial impact on shipping operations in and around Hangzhou Bay, which has the world's highest concentration of container terminals.
In early March, a highly contagious Omicron variant outbreak broke out in Shanghai. Officials in Shanghai began implementing area-based controls on March 28 after basic preventive efforts failed to stop the spread. Daily COVID-19 testing and a full home lockdown for the city's 25 million residents have become more stringent. Residents say they rely on supplies for basic necessities and are not allowed to leave their homes, and food shortages have sparked sporadic public protests.
