  • NORWAY AND FRANCE REACH AGREEMENT ON CO2 TRANSPORTATION AND STORAGE ACROSS BORDERS

    DETAIL INFORMATION

Norway and France finalized a deal that allows the transport of CO2 from industrial emission sources in France to Norway for storage under the North Sea. This marks an essential advancement in the developing carbon capture and storage sector and occurs as Norway has officially launched its inaugural CCS project for commercial use.

The signing event occurred on June 23 in Norway, aligned with French President Emmanuel Macron's visit to the country. Macron has emphasized the need to create CO2 capture programs as a key element of France’s climate strategy. In 2022, the nations inked a letter of intent, and recently, France approved the essential legislative changes in its National Assembly to allow cross-border CO2 transport.

The pact facilitates the movement of CO2 from French industrial centers like Le Havre, Dunkirk, and Saint-Nazaire to storage locations on the Norwegian continental shelf. It will enable the management of French emissions via permanent offshore storage in the North Sea and encourages the creation of a unified European market for carbon capture and storage (CCS).
