  • DENMARK AUTHORISES THE FIRST "REMOTE PILOTAGE" TRIAL IN HISTORY.

    DETAIL INFORMATION

The first test program for "remote pilotage"—a sophisticated technique for remotely navigating ships without a pilot on board—has been approved by Danish authorities.

The idea of remote vessel guidance is not novel in and of itself. In crowded waters, VTS operators can remotely monitor traffic and provide individual ships with navigational safety recommendations. However, up until now, pilotage has always required face-to-face interaction.

In collaboration with DanPilot, Danelec has created a system that allows pilots to remotely provide guidance by utilising advanced data from the ship. Among the benefits are reduced ship fuel consumption and enhanced pilot safety due to the elimination of pilot ladders and pilot launches. When compared to in-person pilotage, the partners say the novel method does not compromise navigational safety.
