The delivery of the largest capacity car carrier in the world is being highlighted by China Merchants, a shipbuilding company, and BYD, a Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer. As the new ship gets ready for its inaugural trip to Brazil, the naming ceremony for BYD Shenzhen was held in Yizheng, China on April 22.
The ship, which is one of four ships in a class created by Deltamarin, represents a number of significant developments in the industry. CMJL Nanjing Shipyard will build two ships, while CMHI Jiangsu Shipyard will build two. 9,200 conventional car spots spread across 16 decks make BYD Shenzhen the largest vehicle carrier, according to reports. It outperforms the 9,100-car Höegh Aurora, the first Aurora-class ship delivered by Höegh Autoliner in August 2024. With a capacity of 9,200 units, the second of the class, BYD Changsha, was introduced in March.
