AMMONIA ENGINE OPERATING AT FULL SCALE AT 100% LOAD
DETAIL INFORMATION
For the first time, MAN Energy Solutions' ME-LGIA (-Liquid Gas Injection Ammonia) engine, which is presently being tested at its Research Centre Copenhagen (RCC) facility, has operated at 100% engine load.
"We started full-scale testing in November 2024 and have since moved forward in a cautious and safety-first manner," stated Ole Pyndt Hansen, Head of Two-Stroke Research & Development, MAN Energy Solutions. This represents yet another significant advancement in the maritime energy transition as we have now run the engine on ammonia from 25 to 100% load. With diesel-pilot amounts recorded in accordance with our goals, we have thereby verified the ammonia fuel-injection system across the whole load curve. Additionally, full-scale engine operation has confirmed the excellent emission and performance characteristics from earlier, single-cylinder experiments.
According to MAN Energy Solutions, all supply and safety systems functioned as planned, and its exclusive SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) was able to treat exhaust gases at all test loads. Additionally, it states that the next testing phase will concentrate on optimising performance and emissions, encompassing control techniques and injection and SCR systems.
