NIKE AND CMA CGM WILL DEPLOY AN ELECTRIC BARGE IN VIETNAM
DETAIL INFORMATION
In addition to investing heavily in LNG-powered containerships as part of its environmental commitments, the CMA CGM Group is planning to build a special electric-powered cargo barge for onshore service in Vietnam. The barge, which is anticipated to begin operations in 2026, will run on batteries and a specialised green power plant, offering a cutting-edge approach to decarbonising logistics and freight transportation in Vietnam.
In collaboration with China's CATL for the battery technology, CMA CGM's New Build and R&D teams are co-designing the e-barge. Nike has pledged to maximise the barge's utilisation for its cargoes between Binh Duong Province and the Gemalink deep-sea terminal in Cai Mep after it is deployed. The round-trip distance will be 180 km (112 miles).
A specialised charging infrastructure will be created to facilitate the new barge's operation. A brand-new solar farm at the Gemalink terminal in Cai Mep, which is 25% owned by CMA CGM, will provide the energy. With the solar farm generating 1GWH of green electricity a year, the operation will be certified using only renewable energy.
