  • SANMAR YARD IN TURKEY LAUNCHES LATIN AMERICA'S FIRST ELECTRIC TUG

    DETAIL INFORMATION

On December 3, the operating collaboration between Enap and SAAM celebrated the launch of the first electric tug in Latin America with Sanmar. It coincides with Sanmar's aggressive efforts to establish its dominance in the electric tug market and the industry's explosive growth in battery-powered tugs.

The ship, which was designed by Robert Allan Ltd. and constructed at the Sanmar shipyard in Tuzla Bay, Istanbul, will be used for berthing and unberthing services in Puerto Chacabuco, which is located in the Aysén Region of Chile. To begin this service, SAAM and Empresa Nacional del Petróleo (Enap) inked a service agreement in January 2024.

The electric-powered tug is almost 43 feet (13 meters) wide (beam) and 82 feet (25 meters) long. The maximum bollard pull of the tug will be more than 70 metric tonnes. Before being sent to Chile, the ship will undergo sea trials and outfitting. In the first half of 2025, it is expected to reach South America.
