  • ON WEDNESDAY, A NATIONWIDE LONGSHORE STRIKE MIGHT AFFECT EVERY MAJOR PORT IN INDIA

    DETAIL INFORMATION

The longshore unions in India are on the verge of going on strike after nearly three years of pay discussions. Should last-ditch negotiations fail to result in a settlement, the unions might start a walkout as early as Wednesday morning.

A last round of talks between the Centre of Indian Trade Unions and the government-run India Ports Association is scheduled for Tuesday. Strikes could affect all 12 major Indian seaports, including Mumbai, Tuticorin, Jawaharlal Nehru, Kochi, Kolkata, Visakhapatnam, and Kandla, if the negotiations fail.

Approximately 20,000 dockers and harbour tug operators would be affected by the walkouts, according to the union consortium. Even privately run, non-union terminals in the 12 impacted ports could not be able to dock and undock boats due to tug crew participation in the strike.
